##[(text-colour:purple)[Hi all, I'm Shannon!]]
It's nice to (virtually) meet you! If this is your first time visiting my blog, welcome! I hope there are many fun and tasty treats ahead for you!
If you're someone who's visited my blog before and finally got curious enough to check out my about page, well strap in, you're about to learn about the woman behind the baking!!!
###A little about me...
Honestly, there's not too much to know!
Besides being a little dessert-obsessed, I'm pretty average! I was born and rasied in Kansas, USA, as a single child to two loving parents. My mother Shonna worked as an accountant, and my father Shane hopped around jobs for a while before and during my childhood before he ended up settiling and working as a paralegal. So, I don't come from a long line of professional bakers or anything!
And yes, you may have noticed, my parents gave me a name that starts with "Sh" on purpose so we could all match as a family. I may not have inherited my baking skills from them, but my cheesy love for alliteration... I think we can all see where that comes from!!
After growing up in the Kansas suburbs and going to a nearby college, I moved out of state to pursue a job offer I was given post-graduation. I didn't love moving away from my family, but I also was looking forward to the adventure of it all!
(if:$husband is true)[And what an adventure it was! It wasn't long before I met Giles, who some may know as my darling husband. But at the time, he was just the handsome young man who worked the icecream counter! We had a bit of a whirlwind romance... in less than a year, we were engaged! I kept it pretty under wraps, but coworkers and neighbors soon started to ask about my engagement ring... and then follow it up with if I would be making my own wedding cake! (I did not, and it was peaceful and delicious.) We had a small lile wedding tha was more of an elopement, and have been happy ever since! He travels a lot for his job (no, no longer serving icecream!) but we still have a happy marriage, don't you worry!]
For a bit of internet safety, just like how I don't reveal my last name, I'm going to steer clear of revealing my job or where I live now... not that I wouldn't love to trust every single one of you. But as my dad always loved to say, "Better be a bit too safe than way too sorry!"
###Why a dessert focused recipe blog?
Well... who doesn't need a bit of sweetness in their life!
Cheesy, I know (I did just warn you), but think about it. Being a little kid and an adult handing you a piece of candy from out of a purse or pocket as a special treat, the magic of birthday cake, the excitement at holiday family gatherings when the pies and cookies are brought out after the meal, the sugar-fuled glee of trick-or-treating, the philanthropic and delicious appeal of bakesale brownies, the way your day is made when someone brings a baked good to share into work, the stash of chocolates you keep as a pick-me-up for tough days.
Sugar makes us feel good chemically, sure, but it also makes us feel good in the ways we use it to celebrate life. Desserts are a part of connection, of caring, of taking part of what makes us feel good.
...I guess that could all boil down to "Sugar is fun", which I also stand by.
But of course, I didn't start out baking because of such philosphical musings! I actually started out baking as a young teen, when my step-grandfather and great aunt were trying to find ways to connect with me. My paternal grandmother remarried at the age of 62 (you're never too old for love!), and her new husband, Pablo, was eager to be part of the family. Him and my parents got along great, and he was happy to embrace them as a man who had never had kids of his own. But also, because he had never had kids of his own, he was a bit foggy when it came to how to connect to a tweenage girl. (do people still use that word?)
So he figured, everyone likes cupcakes! My great aunt heard about this, and she herself being someone who very much liked cupcakes, asked to join him so she could get in on the tasty treats and also connect with the new youngest member of her family.
Those days of baking with them were great. We were all really bad at first. Like, //really// bad. But slowly, with a lot of spilled flour, misread recipes, and scrubbing burnt batter off baking pans, we got to the point where everyone was eager to try whatever we made! We stuck to desserts, due to the shared sweet tooth among us three. At family holidays it became an ongoing tradition to keep whatever we were making secret until we served it. Because of this, my grandma started the joke of calling us the "Traitorus Trio" for never giving in to my parents demands to know what we were making!!
So, when I moved out of state and away from my family for the first time (as you read above) I looked to baking desserts as a way to chase out the lonely bug taking up place in my heart.
And it worked!
It helped me introduce myself and make friends with my neighbors, my desserts became the star of any work potluck, and whenever the blues tried to sneak up on me, I could turn to my favourite comforting hobby of baking.
And the best part...
Now for family holidays, me, my step-grandfather, and my great aunt ALL bring a dessert!!
We've even kept up the tradition of keeping it a secret until it's time to serve them, which has led to the occasional duplicate pumpkin pies or repeating panellets. But hey, nobody was complaing!
After enough people asked me for my recipes and baking tips, I decided to try out starting a blog to publish them on. It felt a little silly at first, telling people they could find the recipe they wanted on my blog, but people were a lot more receptive to it that I expected. And eventually, people I didn't even know started reading it! At some point, it started getting a lot more daily reads than I was prepared for, so I had to dedicate more time into beefing up my website. Sooo, you may find some outdated pages here and there. Mind the dust!
Given this websites humble begginings of a basic site so I could avoid answering my coworkers emails about how I made my latest batch of cookies, I have no idea how it became such a widely searched for and referenced recipe blog.
But hey- the mysteries of the internet, right!?

#Blueberry Suprise Birthday Cake (One-of-a-Kind!)]]
}
[ $blog[
Hi all!
If you're here, it's likely for my delicious blueberry surprise birthday cake recipe that I LOVE to share.
<img src="https://danrishe.neocities.org/shannons_sweet_shares/blueberrycake%20(1).png">
I thought this would be a great time to share it, since it's someone's birthday soon (hint hint... me!) and blueberries are currently in season! Well, they are where I live at least. So that made this recipe RIPE for the picking, because...
I’ve had this recipe for a LONG time!
Though, here’s the interesting thing…. I have (text-style:"underline")[no idea] where I got it!
If you're a usual reader of my website, you’re likely familiar with the stories behind most of my recipes. I know there's lots of jokes out there about people always skipping to get to the recipe on food blogs, but I know there's a dedicated group who always scroll through and enjoy reading my stories! At least… I sure hope so!!
Anywho, back to this recipe's origin story! Most of my recipes come from my family members. Especially my Mother, Great Aunt, and Step-Grandfather.. But this one came from… none of the above!
Any guesses about who it could be from? My notorious Nosy Neighbor? My cranky but loveable Former Coach coach? My goofy and beloved Husband? Or maybe somebody I've never even mentioned on the blog before??
Ooooo... what a mystery!
Maybe you can help me solve it?
Because the answer is...
I don't know!
Wait, whaat??
Yep, that's right, I genuinley have no idea!
I simply found it in my inbox a couple of months back. Now, having readers (dare I say, fans?) of my blog send me their own recipes to test bake and potentially post is nothing new. As a sweet example, here's this recipe sent in by the lovely Inaaya for her family's version of the popular dessert gulab jamun.
[[Inaaya's family-favorite gulab jamun]]
But this recipe had no name attached. Actually, it had nothing in the email at all except the .pdf of the recipe- not even a subject!
The sender was someone I didn't know, and their email address was a string of random (I think) numbers and letters at a domain that was also a string of what looked like nonsense.
So... as a naturally curious person, I had my computer malware software scan the file, and once it was deemed safe, opened it up! I know, I know, some of you may be thinking that was too risky of a move, especially with the mystery of the sender. But, you might change your tune... after having some of this delicious cake!!!!

#Coach Sandie's Baked Alaska (it's the bomb!)]]
$blog[ (text-style:"underline","superscript")+(align:"====><==")+(box:"X=")
[[Welcome to my blog! -> About]] ^^Posted June 4th, 2004^^]
}
$blog[Hey there all!
Are you ready for a bit of a challenge? Or at least ready to give it a good try? As my old swim coach used to say "If you don't swim, you sink!"
My former swim coach Sandie is who this recipe comes from! I think a lot of people wouldn't guess she has such a fine-tuned sweet tooth given her infamous cranky (but beloved!) personality. But that woman knows her stuff! She'll admit it herself that she's more of a connoisseur than a chef. I've even heard her joke that while (mouseover-replace:"her wife has")[her ~~wife~~ spouse has]her wife has good taste in wine, she has good taste in pastries!
But never let it be said that Sandie didn't love (mouseover-append:"to achieve a challenge.")[~~ And that's something she always encouraged in me- when I decided I wanted to go into software engineering, everyone else warned me that it's too new, too much of a male-dominated field, too challenging. She was the one who told me "Hell yeah, go kick some ass!" That was sort of her life motto when it came to achieving whatever she set her mind to. ~~]to achieve a challenge. Be it coaching her team to at least regionals every year, fixing up antique car engines, (no, really!) or memeroizing digits of pi into the hundreds, she doesn't back down. So of course if she was going to learn how to bake a dessert as a special surprise (mouseover-replace:"for her wife on")[for her ~~wife~~ spouse on]for her wife on their anniversary, she'd choose one notourious for being challenging.
She also knows when to put pride aside and ask (mouseover-replace:"for help.")[for(text-style:"double-underline")[ help].]for help. So, after one too many incidences of melted ice cream and soggy sponge, she called up her favorite (okay, she's never //said that//, but I like to think so) former student to come lend her an oven-mitt covered hand.
(mouseover-replace:"And hey, a bonus of living alone: I can make as big of a mess as I want in my kitchen! ")[~~And hey, a bonus of living alone: I can make as big of a mess as I want in my kitchen!~~ And since this was a week my husband was off traveling for a business trip, I didn't have to worry about taking over the kitchen! (And making a bit of a mess in the process. Don't worry, I always clean it up!) ]And hey, a bonus of living alone: I can make as big of a mess as I want in my kitchen!
But since she wanted to keep it all as a (mouseover-replace:"surprise for her wife,")[surprise for her ~~wife~~ spouse,]surprise for her wife, Coach Sandie was a lot more limited. (mouseover-replace:"Which meant she came over to bake with me in my kitchen- look, being single comes in handy! Now if only somebody could tell my busybody neighbor that...")[~~Look, being single comes in handy! Now if only somebody could tell my busybody neighbor that...~~So as much as I always miss him when he's away, it came in handy that my husband was out of town this weekend so she could come over and use my kitchen.]Which meant she came over to bake with me in my kitchen- look, being single comes in handy! Now if only somebody could tell my busybody neighbor that...
Alright, let's get into it! I'll tell you everywhere we went wrong so you don't have to repeat our misakes. And there were //several//. I even joked I was acting like my mom in the kitchen! Her baking skills are... well, disasterous. Unless it's her recipe for [[Almond Tea Cakes ->Mother2]] which she's PERFECTED over the years.
Just like you'll be able to perfect this baked alaska!
##Tips & Tricks
* ''Practice your meringue skills!'' If you're not used to making a meringue, then you could risk a messy oven from melted icecream. It's helpful to practice baking a few meringues so you get a "bakers sense" for how long it takes for them to set and brown in the oven. That way, when you're baking one that has that all-so-delicious icecream inside, you can pull off a success! Plus, you'll have extra meringue to snack on!
* ''Consider making your own icecream'' This is by //no// means neccesary, store bought will work great, and even better in some cases! But remember, I'm working with a perfectionsit here, so she wanted to make a custom strawberry & pistachio icecream. (It was downright scrumptious) For this recipe I list your choice of storebought icecream in the ingredients, but if you'd like to make your own you can use the recipe I posted for homemade icecream that I developed with my sissttteeerrrrrrrrrerrrerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr(text-style:"rumble")[rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr]rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr(text-style:"fade-in-out")[rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr](text-style:"sway")[rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr]rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr(text-style:"shudder")[rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr](text-style:"tall")[rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr]

#Hubby's Handy Trail Mix Bars!]]
$blog[ (text-style:"underline","superscript")+(align:"====><==")+(box:"X=")
[[Welcome to my blog! -> About]] ^^Posted September 24th, 2004^^]
}
$blog[Hi all!
Today's a great treat for all you hikers out there!! My darling husband Giles has asked for my help with developing this recipe- he wanted something easier than trail mix to eat on his hikes, but didn't wanna part with that sweet and salty goodness. So, we put our heads together and developed these trail mix granola bars!
They also work GREAT for travelers- Giles tested it out himself! He travels a lot for work, and he told me that on his recent work trip these bars were a lifesaver on the plane when the in-flight meal just wasn't enough. //And// they pass all the new rules for what you can and can't bring on the planes.
A fellow traveler sitting next to him even asked what he was eating! He was apparently surprised to hear they were homemade and not store bought!
And since I started this blog in the first place as a way to share my recipes people asked for, that was a good kick to get me to upload this one!
If you have kiddos at home that end up your taste testers, I’d love to hear how they take to them! You can write in about using my [[Contact Page!]]
Alright, let's get to it!
##Tips & Tricks
* ''This recipe can get MESSY.'' Make sure you have enough time and kitchen space to lay it all out and clean it all up!
* ''Since these need to be set in the fridge, make sure you make room for them.'' The recipe has you make them in a baking pan (even though there's no baking involved!) so you'll need enough room to set that in the fridge without squishing any produce.
* ''Don’t be afraid to taste it and experiment as you go along!'' Giles and I had lots of taste tests, (it's just so yummy!) and that actually ended up helping us adjust our ratio of ingredients as we went along to get a final result we really enjoyed. You can follow the recipe as written, or do the same to adjust it to your exact tastes!
* ''Finally: this recipe is more fun when made with someone!'' Of course, if you want you can always do it alone, but this is a great one to make with a friend or family member.
//(be aware, this makes quie a large batch! Perfect for sharing, but can be overwhelming if you don't have the fridge space or a reason to eat so many!)//
##Ingredients
* Creamy Peanut Butter (or other creamy nut butter)- 2 cups
* Honey (2 tablespoons)
* Rolled oats (2 cups)

#Inaaya's Family-Favorite Gulab Jamun (so yummy!)]
$blog[Hi you all!
I'm very excited to share his ''re''cipe that w''a''s submitted via my newly up-and-running [[Contact Page!]] Okay, well, it's not //new// new, more newly revamped, and definitley newly running! I made my first version of a ''c''ontact page pretty soon after my first launch of t''h''is site, once I realized it had started to reach people I didn't directly know. Including those who were... not so polite, who had very loud opinions. So, I ''m''ad''e a d''edicated e''m''ail people could reach by f''i''lling out a form o''n'' the site, easy peasy! But the original version was verrryyy simp''l''e (hey, I was new to bl''og''ging! Like a lot of people were!) ''in'' that it was just a text box with a a short character limit. Now, it's still a text box, but with a much larger character limit, a way to attach ''fi''les (like recipes! You ca''n'' probably see where this is going...) and a couple other fancy features. Well, they look fancier on the backen''d''.
All of that is to say...
The lovely Inaaya, a self-reported long time reader of my blog has sent in a recipe for me to share!! Thanks so much to Inaaya for reading and baking along these ''pas''t couple of year''s'', and for being ''w''illing to share such a deletcable and cherished family recipe.
##What is Gulab Jamun?
I th''o''ught I'd cove''r'' this for anyone unfamiliar with this ''d''essert. It's ''wi''dely popular in places across ''th''e world, primarilay Indi''a'' and T''u''rkey, a''n''d elsewhere in ''t''he surrounding regions. I'm being a bit brief here for the sake of keeping the focus on the recipe and to not step too far out of my area of expertise.

$blog[Hi! All!
Yes, all! Including you!(mouseover-append:"Hi you!")[ Please, read all of this.] Hi you! I know there's still readers out there who don't skip straight to the recipe, so hello! Though that would be understandable, (mouseover-replace:"with how tempting a treat this one is!")[I need you to pay attention.] with how tempting a treat this one is!
So this is a recipe I somewhat developed myself, though I definitely (mouseover-replace:"had a lot of help.")[need a lot of help.]had a lot of help. I wanted to play around with flavoured souffles, especially after trying a downright delicious vanilla one with fresh cherries at a farmers market I visited a couple of (mouseout-replace:"weekends ago.")[weekends ago, I think. It's getting hard to tell.] weekends ago. I chatted with the woman running the booth about her recipe, and she happily gave me a lot of pointers, some great humour, and even a basic outline of her method and ingredients written on my to-go container! (I of course had to take one home(if:$Husband is true)+(mouseover-replace:"for my husband to try!")[so I could have more later. I love getting to savour desserts by myself. I can appreciate the artistry, skill and care put in without worrying about people waiting for my reaction.] for my husband to try!) What a giving woman, and a wonderful conversationist. (mouseover-append:"delight!")[ (She really was, but near the end I just wanted to be done talking. I felt guiltty for that, but the conversation had been going on for so long.)]She was such a delight!
But this recipe... boy oh boy was it a struggle! I had a bit of difficulty deciphering her handwriting, and then I had to do all of the conversions from metric (she was from South America), and then fill in the gaps of what she'd written down with what she'd told me. (mouseover-append:"It felt a bit like cracking a code!")[ Do you have any experience cracking a code? Do ou hink you can try?]It felt a bit like cracking a code!
But I not only cracked it,(mouseover-append:"goodness!")[ I've always enjoyed finding ways to improve code. It's why I love my job. Even now, I can find some enjoyment in changing code.] I coded in delcious, citrus-y goodness!
That's right, it's an orange flavoured souffle! Which, okay, isn't much of an invention, especialy in France, but mine is different, I promise!
The (mouseover-replace:"key is in")[(text-style:"underline")[key is] in]key is in all the(mouseover-replace:"//types//")[//(text-style:"underline")[type]s//] //types// of orange flavouring used!
Which //does// mean you might have difficulty (mouseover-replace:"in sourcing")[(text-style:"underline")[in source]ing]in sourcing all of the ingredients... sorry! But if you want to try out this arguably brand-new variation on a classic dessert, it's worth driving to a couple (mouseover-replace:"of stores and maybe")[(text-style:"underline")[of] stores and maybe]of stores and maybe stopping at a specialty one or two. There's also (mouseover-replace:"more and more websites")[more and more (text-style:"underline")[website]s]more and more websites for ordering online!
Now, a souffle is a notourisly (mouseover-append:"tricky dessert to bake correctly.")[There are only so many things that can be changed before it stops working entirely. That's what I've found.]tricky dessert to bake correctly. So, if you're (mouseover-replace:"using this as a learning experience, I'd suggest having extra, doubles or more, of the amount of ingredients for the number of souffles you're looking to make. ")[going to see it through, you need to carefully read everything I've written. All of it. Please.]using this as a learning experience, I'd suggest having extra, doubles or more, of the amount of ingredients for the number of souffles you're looking to make.
Oh, looks like I'm getting ahead of myself- I'm giving the tips & tricks before the tips and tricks section!
But I do really believe this recipe is (mouseover-append:"worth the effort.")[So please, please, don't give up.]worth the effort. Well, I sure hope so, because with how much I've built it up... I wouldn't want your expectations //falling flat.//
Get it? Like a souffle can "fall flat" from collpasing if not taken out of the oven at the right time? Hopefully, since you're part of my audience, you get and appreciate a good baking joke. (Or, even a bad one...)
But don't worry about your souffle collapsing, as I have lots of helpful tips you may need all down below!

#Blueberry Suprise Birthday Cake (One-of-a-Kind!)]]
}
$blog[Hi all!
If you're here, it's likely for my delicious blueberry surprise birthday cake recipe that I LOVE to share.
<img src="https://danrishe.neocities.org/shannons_sweet_shares/blueberrycake%20(1).png">
I know there's lots of jokes out there about people always skipping to get to the recipe, but I know there's a dedicated group who always scroll through and enjoy reading my stories! At least… I sure hope so!! Please!!
Anywho, back to this recipe's origin story! Most of my recipes come from my family members. Especially my mother, great aunt, and step-grandfather. But this one came from… none of the above!
Any guesses about who it could be from? My notorious nosy neighbor? My cranky but loveable former coach? My goofy and beloved husband? Or maybe somebody I've never even mentioned on the blog before??
Ooooo... what a mystery!
Maybe you can help me solve it?
Because the answer is...
I don't know!
Wait, whaat??
Yep, that's right, I genuinely have no idea!
I simply found it in my inbox a couple of months back. At least I think it was months. It's getting hard to tell. Now, having readers (dare I say, fans?) of my blog send me their own recipes to test bake and potentially post is nothing new. There's this recipe sent in by the lovely Inaaya for her family's version of the popular dessert gulab jamun.
I don't know. I don't know I don't know.
So... as a naturally curious person, I had my computer malware software scan the file, and once it was deemed safe, opened it up! I know, I know, some of you may be thinking that was too risky of a move, especially with the mystery of the sender. But, you might change your tune... after having some of this delicious cake!!!!
##Tips & Tricks
* ''Make sure you sift your flour!'' I promise, it'll really ^^help^^ make sure there's no clumps in the final batter since you have to be careful not to overmix.
* ''Frozen berries work too!'' A lot of other recipes will specify the importance of fresh blueberries, but that isn't the case here. Frozen blueberries that you've thawed and dried off will have a much softer inside, causing their juice (and therefore colour!) to spread more within the cake sponge. For^^ me^^ personally, I love the way this looks! The more purple, the better!
* ''You have choices in frosting!'' There's plenty of odd things about this recipe, and one of them is that it doesn't include any instructions for the frosting. It says to use frosting, but gives no specifics on flavour or type. You can always use frosting recipes I've shared, like this one for the [[best base buttercream ->Nosy Neighbor 2]] that is great for making your own with different add-ins, like flavorings and fruit. But store bought works too! You can use whatever frosting you ^^please^^, and I'd love to hear what yummy combinations you come up with in the comment section!
##Common Problems (And How to Fix Them!)
''I don't have the type of baking pan the recipe recommends:'' That's a-okay! You can refer to my handy dandy [[conversion chart]] page, where I list the recommended baking temperature and baking time changes to make depending on pan type and recipe type. This helps you turn square cakes into bundt cakes, brownies into cupcake-shapes, even cookies into cookie-cakes! If you have a pan problem that can't be aided using that chart, you can also always reach out to me using my [[Contact Page!]] Fancy, right? (I always look forward to when people reach out. Please!)
''My eggs aren't room temperature, oops!'' Hey, that's alright! We all sometimes forget! I find myself forgetting an awful lot these days (sometimes it feels like I'm forgetting more than I'm remembering, even) so no worries. The eggs being room temperature is important because of the melted butter and overall dough, but it won't make or break the recipe. If you have enough time, I suggest letting the eggs sit in a bowl of lightly warm water. (does anyone feel so much of their life is unreachable within their own mind?) Meanwhile, you can work on any frosting/icing/decorations, and store those in the fridge while the cake bakes! Epic!
''The toothpick I'm using to check for doneness is still coming out wet even after bake time:'' First things first, go back and check my conversion chart page (linked above) to double check that you're using the right temps and times for the pan you're using. That could be the issue! If only all issues were that easy to fix, right? But I guess not everything can be solved by referencing something on the internet. I've been trying. Do you ever miss life offline? If you have it right or not, don't worry, simply leave it in for longer and maybe turn up the heat a little bit- just overall use your bakers intuition!
And now.... the recipe!!!! I hope you all like it as much as I think I did!

Hi all!
So, each year for my birthday (yes, I'm a July baby) my mom makes me these cute almond tea cakes. When she was pregnant with me, there was a period of a couple of months where she had //really// strong sweet cravings. She wasn't much of a baker herself, so it was a lot of her trying out different local bakeries around town. And when she wasn't up for it, my dad drove around to all of them until he found the one that carried the pistachio cupcakes she absolutely //needed//... but had forgotten which place had them!
She became friends with the owner of one of these bakeries (to be honest, she pretty much befriended them all, or was at least on good terms) and the owner gifted her this recipe as something she could make with her future daughter. And that was me!
Sadly, the owner, who I'll call Miss Sally, passed away when I was still a young child, so she never got (after:18s)[to meet my little sister or get] to know that I myself became a passionate baker. Fortunately, I did get to meet her when I was a very little kid, and my memories of her are really fond.
And thanks to her, I have lots of great memories around these little tea cakes. For my first birthday, my mom made them for the first time. She burnt them //terribly//.
(My dad still hasn't let her live that down...)
She got better at them over the years, and by my 6th birthday they had become something delicious to look forward to! (after:20s)[And something even better to look forward to… my baby sister was born that very same year!
This time, my moms cravings were snow cones, or anything else icy cold…
When my sister and I got into squabbles as kids, I'd joke it was because she was so cold-hearted!
Little kid me could be mean, but at least she was clever.
(Don't worry, she'd get back at me by calling me a cavity causer… my mom //did// need a lot of dental work after her pregnancy with me. Oops!)
Me and my sister are much closer (and calmer…) now. We’ve even made a recipe together! You

I wasn’t sure how it would go…
But it was actually mostly a pleasant time together! Sure, things were tense in the beginning, but we started to bond talking about family (I talked about my step-grandfather and his sister, my great aunt, and the Spanish recipes I’ve learned with them) and then once they saw I really knew my stuff when it came to baking, we were able to “talk shop” the whole rest of the time about the recipe! Techniques, flavor profiles, favourite tools (they treasure their old school crank sifter. I can't say I blame them!), favourite recipes. This is one of theirs- they said it was the first custard tart recipe they actually got to bake and set properly, after some trial and error.
And the result… a BEAUTIFUL dessert!!! Silky, creamy, decadently vanilla. A real treat for the mouth!
One I still make to this day! You may ask why I haven’t shared it yet when I’ve known it for so long but hey- I can’t share everything! Some parts of life have to stay private, or at least offline. But this one is too yummy not to!

$blog[Hi all! Or should I say, hi you!
Now, I've talked (and maybe complained…) about my next door neighbor a couple of times on this blog. But, no matter how nosy they can get (people keep writing in asking if my neighbor is a woman or a man…. I won't tell you! It shouldn't matter, anyhow!) we’re still neighbors, and often are very neighborly with each other. Bringing over each other's mail if it's delivered to the wrong door, saying hi if we see each other, bringing over some cookies on holidays. And of course…. Exchanging recipes!!!
(mouseover-replace:"My husband")[~~My husband~~] My husband loves flavorings in his desserts, and ever since I told my neighbor that, they will bring me orange-flavored desserts and often recipes so I can “give a treat to my hard-working husband”. (mouseover-replace:"How… thoughtful!")[How sexist!!! Ugh!!!]How… thoughtful!
Often times, he's away traveling at work, and when he is home we like to spend as much time as we can with just the two of us. So (mouseover-replace:"my husband")[~~my husband~~]my husband hasn't met my neighbor yet, but has won them over with his sweet hand-written thank you notes he leaves for them after each sweet treat shared.
We've even left her stuff we've made together! Months ago my husband and I made some delicious [[Trail Mix Bars->Husband]] and gave them some to try!
This past weekend, my neighbor brought over some slices of a delicious chocolate orange cake! And I could NOT get over the beauty of the buttercream! It was citrusy and refreshing, without the acidity ruining the smooth, creamy texture.
I of course had to go over and ask for the recipe (which always has my neighbor looking a little smug) as I wanted to learn to make it myself… and then share it with all of you!
But I was //very// surprised when they said they didn't //have// a recipe for orange buttercream. Instead, they have a basic buttercream they've developed to be able to easily change and adjust for different fillings and flavours! WOW!
This felt like a real bonding moment for us. Both of our eyes lit up, and we chatted for hours about the recipe, how the changes are made, flavor combos both past and hypothetical, and even piping methods!
I love how adaptable and creative this recipe is. It really shows what can be accomplished when you know your baking basics.

$blog[Hi y'all!
Alright, if you're reading this recipe blog it means you probably know me, which means you at least know //of// my little sister Junie. A lot of you have probably met her, and so she comes to mind right away- she's hard to forget!
Today is my dear, darling, lovely, bright, adventurous, snarky, outgoing, loyal, courageous, dramatic, authentic little sister's birthday! (There, is that nice enough for you Junie?)
Unfortunately, she was born a day too late for me to call her a total joke. Instead, I’ve just had to find other ways to tease her- isn’t that what an older sibling is for?
This recipe is one we came up with together on a sweltering summer day around a year ago when we were still living together. (Hi Claire, if you’re reading this, hope you’ve been surviving well having to put up with Junie as your roommate!) Junie was doing her usual dramatics over the heat, as I was trying to focus on solving a sudoku puzzle to use as a distraction from just how dang hot it was. (She’ll make fun of me for doing them, but she can solve one even faster than I can.) Suddenly, my sudoku puzzle book is ripped from my hands, and I look up to see my sister with a maniac grin on her face, saying she had a brilliant idea to combat both the heat and our boredom: make our own ice cream!
Of course, neither of us knew how to do that…
But that’s not going to stop [[Junie! ->SisterX]]

$blog[Tronco De Navidad (Spanish Yule Log Roll Cake!)
Hi all! I'm back with another recipe from my beloved papa Pablo, my step-grandfather who's recently gained a reputation for himself as an all-star baker in his and my grandmother's close-knit retirement community.
This Christmas my dear step-grandfather came to win with an absolute show-stopping rolled cake. He's from Spain, and some fond childhood memories with his family eating “ tronco de Navidad“. He's made it for us a couple times before, (and my aunt and I have also given it a go) but this year he was a step above with his decoration. It seriously looked gorgeous! It was realistic, but it didn't look like an actual log, but instead more like a pretty oil painting of a log- to put it plainer, it was super artistic! (While still being recognizably a yule log)
And it wasn't all looks over substance- he developed a brand spankin’ new recipe, and WOW! I needed to savor every bite! The chocolate had such a beautiful depth, the mascarpone whipped cream filling was decadent and unique, and the chocolate ganache complimented it all instead of overwhelming.
I know this is a dessert recipe blog and not a dessert review blog, but indulge me and let me describe all of that more in-depth:
* ''The chocolate cake- ''He used different types of chocolate to GERUCULW2MAND67UEPALW. This can go poorly if not done in the right ratio, but he IWHEKAQPP in order to ABRIA9OEHA, and so it turned out decadent and rich, but not overwhelming.
* ''The filling- ''This cake is made traditionally with a cream and vanilla flavored filling, but my papa Pedro added fruit! He used HWIDPAK8WMAK and LWU4DODOQQ together in order to give a light, fruity balance that AJDPOSNWHA.
* ''The ganache-'' Ganache can be tricky, but he achieved the perfect texture by KHQIFPALE and MQODONAMM, which you can GHOQPO ABDIOEOE HAOWPPELE. AHEOGORL ANDJ TOTPLW AMOROTL, AJDOOTL TNRO7OW. It’s that easy!
* ''The decoration-'' Where to begin! HALEOPF ABDHEO LLAOWB BOEUATL KYIP NAJ AIIDPT NABEYEOL QBVWMPWH. And HAPEOY BSBAYUIL YQPLANT ABJIORLENAB5RITOKDNABAL6WOJTVYVAMPQIRHYVANQLWPOTJYBANLQOEUYBVFNALWITNNYBXHXYAIOWPALSMNCB1ZBMSNNIOPAPEOBTN2207684AMAKPCOCUBZBZMSKIFRYEYUQOAPALMXNBNMZLALOWUDBSGSGQGQGYEURITOPLGLKXMNZBXBFKFIEYATWIOEPGNNX456NAJAHHDYSYEIW863OPQPSLMNZ345BVCGSHSITITIHWHEOSPLAMSMZBVRHHDTAUOEPELKDULIPLKUUUSLALPWKNABFMXKSIRYWTIWPAMSNDBVDGDYWQQ63RIOPLMBXZSADGIOYTEERCVNMLOTSACBHFTISUTSRUARSGCJVKBOT7SGCABSJFITAFVEJDIOSOPAKMDVCR3HAIOTKNRVACAGYFISOKANDVTNFKOUACTVJSPAUVFNSKYFJ43AHCAUFOKSBFJFO

Hi! All!
Yes, all! Including you! Hi you! I know there's still readers out there who don't skip straight to the recipe, so hello! Though that would be understandable, with how tempting a treat this one is!
So this is a recipe I somewhat developed myself, though I definetly had a lot of help. I wanted to play around with flavoured souffles, especially after trying a downright delicious vanilla one with fresh cherries at a farmers market I visited a couple of weekends ago. I chatted with the woman running the booth about her recipe, and she happily gave me a lot of pointers, some great humour, and even a basic outline of her method and ingredients written on my to-go container! (I of course had to take one home for my husband to try!) What a giving woman, and a wonderful conversationist. She was such a delight!
But this recipe... boy oh boy was it a struggle! I had a bit of difficulty deciphering her handwriting, and then I had to do all of the conversions from metric (she was from South America), and then fill in the gaps of what she'd written down with what she'd told me. It felt a bit like cracking a code!
But I not only cracked it, I coded in delcious, citrus-y goodness!
That's right, it's an orange flavoured souffle! Which, okay, isn't much of an invention, especialy in France, but mine is different, I promise! The key is in all the //types// of orange flavouring used!
Which //does// mean you might have difficulty in sourcing all of the ingredients... sorry! But if you want to try out this arguably brand-new variation on a classic dessert, it's worth driving to a couple of stores and maybe stopping at a specialty one or two. There's also more and more websites for ordering online!
Now, a souffle is a notourisly tricky dessert to bake correctly. So, if you're using this as a learning experience, I'd suggest having extra, doubles or more, of the amount of ingredients for the number of souffles you're looking to make.
Oh, looks like I'm getting ahead of myself- I'm giving the tips & tricks before the tips and tricks section!
But I do really believe this recipe is worth the effort.
But don't worry about your souffle collapsing, as I have lots of helpful tips you may need all down below!

you couldn't have gotten in here if you //hadnt// answered all the quesions correctly...
so you really, //really// did care enough to read it all... and to help...
okay. i can clear up some stuff for you then.
you were reading shannon's dessert recipe blog, "Shannon's Sugary Shares!" which was updated by shannon from 2004-2005.
shannon started leaving hints asking for help, but there were a lot of restrictions on what she could and couldn't change.
it would take specific circumstances for someone to be able to see the changes, and even if they did, they'd then have to care enough to keep reading it all, instead of writing it off as some broken, abandoned site.
which nobody has...
....
until you.

I used to think yes.

What type of choices do you offer in your piece?
Do you have a variety?
Are they binary for the sake of choice (move forward or quite) or is everything purposeful?
What other form of links (asides, non choice-based interactivity etc…) might you include?
What’s offered in the re-read? Do we get a ‘fruitful rereading’ as Kendall says?
What is the scope and scale of your piece?
What do we need more of?
Where was the reader confused?
How to Read - what is the context that we need to get into your work.$blog[{
